Frequently Asked Questions About CEGEP Applications
I applied to a CEGEP, when will I hear back?
- If you applied to John Abbott College, Vanier College or any other institution that uses SRAM you will hear back by April 3rd, 2020 at the latest. The CEGEPs have confirmed that they will be respecting this timeline.
- Dawson, Champlain, Marianopolis College, and other institutions will respond when they have made a decision (anywhere between now and early May).
The college I applied to is asking for proof of adult education course registration, end dates and final marks. What does this mean and how do I provide this?
- When you apply for college, it is important to go see your Guidance Counsellor to ask for a document that shows which courses you are registered for, when they are scheduled to end, and any recent marks you may have obtained that is not yet on your Official Quebec Transcript. The college needs this as proof that you will graduate and meet all program prerequisites before they start school.
- Depending on the college you applied for, you will either be provided a physical document to attach to your online application file, or it will be submitted directly from the Guidance Counsellor to the college's admission department.
- If you do not provide this proof before the application deadline, your application will be refused.
What if I have a degree from another province or country than Quebec?
- If you have completed your High School or higher education outside of Quebec, you must either provide an official Comparative Evaluation for Studies Completed Outside Quebec, or pay for the College to evaluate your original educational documents. Keep in mind that requesting a Comparative Evaluation from Immigration Quebec can take many weeks.
- After evaluation, the college you applied to will indicate which courses you need to take to meet your chosen program's entrance requirements. If you are unsure, contact the College directly for instructions.
My friends have gotten a response and I haven’t, what does that mean?
- While it is certainly stressful to have to wait, there is no reason to assume that you’ve been refused. Some CEGEPs/ programs take longer to respond. There is no reason to jump to any conclusions. Some students will receive a notice of acceptance later than their friends.
What if I am refused?
- If you are refused from a SRAM CEGEP, you will be given a chance to apply again (round 2). When considering to apply for round 2 or 3, please make sure to review program availability and admission requirements on SRAM: https://admission.sram.qc.ca/regulier/places-disponibles/par-programme. Your guidance counsellor/counsellor in academic training is well equipped to help you in this process. Please contact them for assistance to address your specific situation. The deadline to submit a round 2 choice is April 22nd at 11:59pm. Please follow this link to see all the SRAM deadlines: https://www.sram.qc.ca/diploma-of-college-studies/deadlines-and-important-dates
- If you are refused from Dawson, Champlain, or Marianopolis in your first choice, they will consider your second choice (which you indicated on your application when you initially applied). You will then receive a response for your second choice in early May. There are no additional rounds for Dawson, Champlain, Marianopolis and other private CEGEPs.
What if I have been accepted to a CEGEP but it is not the CEGEP I am hoping to attend? (for example, I applied to Dawson and John Abbott, I have heard back from Dawson but I’m hoping to go to John Abbott from whom I haven’t heard)
- Confirm with the CEGEP by accepting their offer of admission (do not worry, this does not impact your chances of being accepted to your first choice CEGEP). If and when the CEGEP you are hoping to attend sends a notice of acceptance, you will need to notify the admissions office of your decision to attend the other CEGEP.
- To change your response, email the admissions office of the respective college: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]
Do I need to pay any additional application fees when applying for round 2 or 3 in a SRAM CEGEP?
- No, if you have already applied and paid the $30 fee for round 1, there are no additional fees.
Do I need to re-submit any documents when applying for round 2 or 3 in a SRAM CEGEP?
- If you are applying for the same program, you do not have to re-upload any documents. If you intend on changing your choice of program, please see the CEGEP websites to review the admission requirements. Some programs require additional documents to submit (e.g., letter of intent or recommendation, portfolio, etc). Guidelines on any of these additional documents can also be found on the CEGEP websites.
What if I paid to confirm my spot, but have since changed my mind. Can I get my money back?
- Yes, you will be reimbursed the bulk of the payment if you change your mind. You will need to be in contact with the CEGEP to ensure this happens. Please email the admissions office of the respective CEGEP.
How do I let a college know that I plan to accept their offer of conditional acceptance?
- Your acceptance letter will tell you how to confirm your acceptance. Please follow the instructions carefully. The deadlines to accept must be respected. Failure to respond on time may result in losing your spot in the college.
Why is it a “conditional” acceptance?
- Conditional acceptance means that you must meet certain conditions to maintain your acceptance (such as maintaining your average and meeting all graduation requirements- including obtaining a passing mark in English and French on your Releve des Apprentissages). Another example would be maintaining a good overall Math mark if you applied to a Commerce program, or Math, Chemistry and Physics marks if you applied to a Science program.
What if I don’t get in at any CEGEP?
- This is also a good time to contact your guidance counsellor or counsellor in academic training. They will help you make a plan depending on your interests and academic situation. Options include Continuing Education in a CEGEP, possibly looking into Ontario colleges, re-applying to CEGEP for the Winter 2020 application deadline (November 1st, 2020), Adult Education (Place Cartier and Pearson Adult and Career Center), Vocational Training (http://www.lbpce.ca/) and the workforce.
What is Continuing Education?
- Continuing Education is part-time, evening studies where you can complete general education courses, such as English, French, Humanities, Physical Education and elective courses(all courses taken will count towards obtaining a Diploma of Collegial Studies). Taking continuing education courses allows you to continue your studies as a CEGEP student and is certainly an asset if wanting to apply for a day-time program at a later date. There is a separate application for Continuing Education, and you must meet all graduation requirements when applying. Please see the CEGEP websites under Continuing Education for more information. This is a path often taken by students who graduate and want to attend a CEGEP, but whose overall average is weak.
What are the graduation requirements?
- You must obtain a minimum of 54 credits from Secondary 4 & 5, 20 of which must come from Secondary 5. Additionally, it is mandatory that you pass the following courses: Secondary 4 History, Science & Technology (or Applied Science), Math, and Art elective (i.e., Visual Art, Music, Drama), and Secondary 5 English, French, Physical Education and/or Ethics.
Am I required to write an English and/ or French placement test?
- English placement tests typically take place in May-June. Please check your omnivox portals or the welcome package you received by mail for information on the dates and formatting of placement tests. All new Vanier and Dawson students must write the English placement test- which is now done online. Only new JAC students with a final grade of 79% or less in secondary 4 English will have to write the English placement test. French placement is based on your final grades in secondary 5 French, therefore no student is required to write a French placement test, unless otherwise specified by the CEGEP.
What if I’m considering Vocational Training/Trade School?
- Applications to Vocational Training programs are on-going and can be done online through https://www.srafp.com. Through this website, you will be able to search the different programs available in Quebec, their eligibility requirements, and start dates. Some programs may be more in-demand than others, and therefore, we recommend that you research the status of your intended program as well as start dates to ensure availability. Please note that there are wait-lists for some programs (e.g., Electricity, Plumbing and Heating), therefore it is essential to communicate directly with the vocational centre in order to have your name added to the waiting list. Please remember that you must send your completed application along with other additional documents (e.g., birth certificate, secondary 4 official transcript, two pieces of ID) to the vocational centre that you have applied to. Failure to do so will result in an incomplete application. The center where your chosen program is offered will contact you for an information session and a possible interview.
What if I had a Student for A Day booked at a CEGEP or Vocational Training centre between now and March 27th?
- All schools and CEGEPs, including vocational training centres will be closed during this time period. This means that any scheduled tour will have to be rescheduled. Please communicate directly with the CEGEP or centre for more information.
If you have further questions or concerns, please reach out to the PACC Adult Guidance Department.
